THE PROJECT

Life_Logo_1.png

With the LIFE+ Dry Forest project, the National Park of La Réunion supported by the Conservatoire du littoral, the french governement (DEAL), the Departemental council and the Regional council of La Réunion keeps following his hard ecological work to preserve the reunionese biodiversity.

The main objective is to preserve the dry forest, a natural and cultural patrimony, which is unique around the world. Without the man hand, this forest will disappear under the increasing pressure from the invasives species.

At his end, the project will have help to reintroduce, through local actors and volunteers, 80 000 endemic and indigenious plants on 27.5 ha of field and to eradicate 45.5 ha of invasives species. To optimize the forest’s regeneration, 50 Gecko vert de Bourbon have been released on la Grande Chaloupe area.

On September 2020, the LIFE+ Dry Forest reaches his end, and the team invites you to the ”LIFE+ Dry Forest and Petrels projects : Restitution and closing worjshop on ecological conservation fieldwork” from 18 to 19 may 2020. Results from ecological conservation fieldworks will be showcased.

LIFE+

The LIFE + Dry Forest project is funded 50% by the LIFE tool (The Financial Instrument for the Environment) of the European Commission.

Created in 1992, LIFE programs are an application of the environmental policy of the European Commission. Since 2007, they have been open and accessible to French overseas departments. LIFE + Biodiversity-type projects aim to halt the loss of biodiversity and the decline of ecological services provided by natural environments by preventing, among other things, the disappearance of habitats and species unique to the world. The LIFE + Dry Forest project, started in 2009, is the first overseas LIFE project.

LE PARC NATIONAL DE LA REUNION

Created in March 2007, the National Park of La Réunion, which is driving the LIFE+ Dry Forest project, is a public administrative establishment. Its mission is to ensure the conservation and the enhancement of the natural and cultural heritage on its territory.

The National Park is also the manager of the “Pitons, Cirques and Ramparts” property listed as the UNESCO World Heritage. Within this framework, the National Park conducts and supports in particular actions of knowledge, preservation and conservation of ecosystems.

CONSERVATOIRE DU LITTORAL

The Conservatoire du littoral is a public administrative establishment created on July 10, 1975.
He is an associate beneficiary. It conducts a land policy to permanently protect coastal natural spaces from urbanization, artificialization or irreversible degradation. It entrusts the management of its land, mainly to local communities to set up restoration, development and public reception activities.
The Conservatory has been operating since 1996 on the Grande Chaloupe site. He is now the owner of 750 hectares located between Ravine Tamarins and Ravine à Malheur and intends to further strengthen his action in favor of the dry forest.
